Our Mission
About REEF
REEF was founded in 1990 in Key Largo, Florida, USA. Today, REEF's marine conservation and education programs serve the Tropical Western Atlantic, South Atlantic States, Northeast US & Canada, Pacific Coast, Tropical Eastern Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Eastern Atlantic & Mediterranean, and South Pacific. REEF has offices in Key Largo, FL, and field offices in California and Washington State. REEF’s strategic partnerships with government agencies, scientific and academic institutions, the non-profit sector, the dive industry, and local communities amplify the efforts of individual volunteers, allowing them to make significant contributions to ongoing conservation projects. REEF's Annual Reports are available online here.
Core REEF Projects
In 1993, REEF launched the Volunteer Fish Survey Project. This citizen science fish monitoring program has since become the world's largest such effort. In 2001, REEF initiated two additional marine conservation research programs. 1) The Grouper Moon Project focuses on mass spawning aggregations of the Nassau Grouper, an endangered Caribbean reef fish, and 2) The Invasive Lionfish Program focuses on the invasion of the Indo-Pacific Lionfish into the western Atlantic.
- VOLUNTEER FISH SURVEY PROJECT (All Regions)
- GROUPER MOON PROJECT (Cayman Islands)
- EXOTIC & INVASIVE LIONFISH PROGRAM (Western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean)
